Kids DIY: How to make a Rainstick (how-to video)

How to make a rainstick

No matter the time of year, or where we live, rain is a part of life. As long as we’re not confined for weeks on end, what’s better than a rainy day inside, sitting around in your PJs and watching movies. The sound of rain hitting the roof is beautiful and relaxing & mesmorising. Why not recreate it with a rainstick that kids adore. Have a watch to find out how:

  • Coloured Tape
  • Scissors
  • Dried beans or grains
  • 2 cupcake liners
  • Aluminium foil
  • 1 cardboard tube (paper towel tube is perfect)

  1. Cut the tape into pieces that will go around the tube
  2. Tape 1 cupcake liners to one end
  3. Decorate the tube with the tape
  4. Twist the foil to act as the ‘catcher’ inside the tube and insert it inside the tube
  5. Add beans/grains to the tube
  6. Tape the 2nd cupcake liner to the end
  7. Play!

A few tips from our Creative Learning Program:

– talk about different colours & textures of the tape that you’re using and of the beans
– you can decorate your tube with other materials if you want to increase the time or activity level for older kids
– combine other wet weather activities with this rain stick and celebrate the coming of rain instead of dreading it
– perfect for talking about seasons, weather or the cultural significance of rainsticks which were used and found in South America.
