I have to admit, running a business on your own is really hard work and can be a very lonely place. I’m often in head down, bum up mode and when I do make time to relax or have time out, it’s usually with my family. I attended a branding conference the other day with The Connection Exchange and it was great and reminded me of how important it is to keep investing in your personal development and education. The day gave me a ton of motivation, new ideas and a renewed energy. I aim to go to 1 offsite conference like this every quarter but there are lots of days and hours in between when motivation, energy and ideas wane.
So where to turn? Friends are great but I don’t want to bog down every conversation with my work talk and other business owners are also great to touch in with as we often deal with many of the same issues. Another great resource I use every week are podcasts. Many are interview style with other business owners across industries, who share a bit of what it’s like to run their business, what motivates them, how they’ve tackled adversity and built their business up from scratch. I find these stories very motivating and will always find a nugget or 2 from every one I listen to. I listen when I go for walks, in the car for more than 10 minutes and sometimes in the morning when I wake early. So I’ve put down a list of my Top 4 Podcasts to help you zero in on a few goodies that help kick me into gear each week:
- The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes: Real interviews with business owners, coaches, athletes, that inspire and motivate. Lewis has a nice way of interviewing and I find the interviews really easy to listen to (or even parts of them if time is tight). They’re free and you can subscribe to get updates. http://lewishowes.com/blog/
- Mixergy with Andrew Warner. You do need to sign up for this one (and pay for unlimited access) but I’ve done it a few times to get access to some great interviews. Quite technology-focused but I like to listen to stories from a range of industries as they often have a similar approach to one another and do so for a reason. You catch up on some of the lingo that always helps in technology and competition is fierce in these industries so they have to be at the top of their game to make it. www.mixergy.com
- Robin Sharma. Author, Coach, Leadership trainer. I listen to Robin to help me organise my life better, optimise my thinking, get me kicking goals and keep me motivated. His short podcasts are inspiring and I hope one day I can go to one of his conferences. www.robinsharma.com
- Hustle Culture with Tayo Rockson. The Hustle Culture podcast features interviews with entrepreneurs and hustlers from all walks of life going through the climb and trying to make a difference simultaneously. These hustlers share tips and ways they overcame difficult situations. http://tayorockson.com/podcast/
